About The Project

The goal of this project was to learn and understand UX/UI practices in a gaming context using Sims 4.

Roles & Responsibilities

My role was to analyze the Sims 4 UX/UI design and recreate a version of it by using various UX/UI processes like player journey, paper prototypes, flow charts, wireframes, usability tests, and UI mockups.

Length of the project

7 weeks (March 10 2025 – April 24 2025)

Challenges

  • This was my first exposure to anything UX/UI related in gaming so I had a bit of a learning curve when it came to concepts
  • Limited knowledge of photoshop and figma

Location Screen

Usability Test Results

  • It was hard to notice the save and exit icons
    • Place save and exit icons next to each other and to the top right
  • There should be an indication that the sim can be rotated
    • Add rotation arrows for the sim
  • It would be helpful to know the price of the house
    • Add pricing to houses
  • Check marks to highlight houses is confusing as check marks usually means selected
    • Highlight available and unavailable houses in different ways.
  • There should be save and exit icons on every screen
    • Add save and exit icons on every screen
  • World icons need to be a little bigger and veritically aligned
    • Increase size of world icons and change orientation

UI Mockups & Style Guide

UI Mockups

I wanted to challenge myself decided to add my own twist to the wireframe I created and use Animal Crossing’s UI instead of the native Sims 4 UI.

UI Style Guide

Outcomes & Conclusions

  • Learned UX/UI design principles in a gaming context
  • Learned how to work efficiently within a short time limit with limited resources while learning on the go
  • Learned how to use another game’s style in different situations.

Conclusion

This project was a great exercise for me to grasp the basics of UX/UI in a gaming context. I learned to understand player emotions, created a visual outline of the game’s structure, and created my own version of the game’s wireframe. I was able to use all these processes and create a brand new UI mockup and style guide for the game.

In the future, I would like to work on more screens from more games and develop my own visual guide.
